Participating towns
13 towns from 4 nations have participated in making this toolkit (and they have communicated with many other towns during the process).
The participating SusSET towns are:
Ellon , Scotland
Ellon is a town with a population of 11,000 and is located about 26km north of Aberdeen. It has historical roots as an important river crossing and has expanded greatly in recent decades. |
Inverurie , Scotland
Inverurie is a rural administrative centre with a population of 13,000 and is located about 27km northwest of Aberdeen on the main road to Inverness. It has historical roots as a meeting place between two rivers and is now a rapidly expanding town. |
Stonehaven , Scotland
Stonehaven is a harbour town with a population of 12,000 located around 24km south of Aberdeen. Its physical growth is greatly constrained by landscape features and affordable land and property is hard to find. |
Åmål , Sweden
Åmål is a rural administrative centre with a population of 14,000 and is located at the southwest end of Lake Vänern ( Europe’s largest lake). With a rail connection to the rest of Sweden, Åmål attracts visitors (especially for festivals) and freight industry to the town. |
Kungälv , Sweden
Kungälv is a town with a population of 16,000 and is located just northeast of Gothenburg, Sweden’s second largest city. Its historical roots are very visible at its large ruined castle site, but the town has successfully developed a modern image. |
Strömstad , Sweden
Strömstad is a harbour town of 12,000 people on Sweden’s west coast near the Norwegian border. Formerly a distinct fishing town, Strömstad has become a magnet for tourists and also for Norwegian shoppers. |
Puck , Poland
Puck is a town with a population of 12,000 and is located in the Pomorskie region to the north of Poland’s ‘Tricities’ ( Gdansk, Gdynia and Sopot). It has historical roots based upon its harbour and its role as a place of religious pilgrimage for fishermen from the region of Puck Bay. |
Lębork , Poland
Lębork is one of the largest SusSET towns, with a population of 37,000 and is located between two rivers northwest of Gdansk, around 30km from the north coast. It is a rural administrative centre and most coast-bound visitors pass through it. The town’s economy and tourist attractiveness has been strengthened in the past 3 years. |
Hel , Poland
Hel is the smallest town in SusSET with a population of 4,000 and is located on the northeastern spit of Gdansk Bay. Hel was a replacement town in SusSET for Leba, another nearby coastal town. Both Hel and Leba rely heavily on tourists to support their economy and population numbers dramatically increase in summertime. |
Aegion , Greece
Aegion is a town with a population of 18,000 and is located around 35km east of Patras, the regional capital city, in western Greece. The town has a clear sense of its built and natural heritage and has strong connections with its agricultural and southern mountain ranges. |
Pyrgos , Greece
Pyrgos is one of SusSET’s largest towns with a population of around 35,000 and is located on Greece’s western coast. Although having the image of a modern town, it is only 20km from the ancient site of Olympia and is therefore acutely aware of its area’s heritage. It has a good range of community facilities but town centre congestion. |
Messolonghi , Greece
Messolonghi is a town with a population of 18,000 and is located on the Greek west coast to the north of the Corinthian Sea. It is steeped in history, including bloody 18th Century battles with the Turks. It is known as the ‘ Sacred Town’ but has one of Greece’s largest salt-making industries at the edge of the town and is increasingly dependent on tourism and fish farming. |
