What we recommend.

In order to provide successful community safety and facilities initiatives, it is important for local officials to maintain an open dialogue with residents (see ‘Community Dialogue and Engagement’ component). By responding to residents’ reports of crime and anti-social behaviour, local practitioners help to strengthen the community’s faith in its service. This helps to guarantee maximum participation in the delivery of a solution. Likewise, by working to provide a community facility or shared service, local practitioners are working to enhance the sense of place and strengthen the community identity (see ‘Identity and Culture’ component). In order to deliver safer communities with adequate facilities, practitioners must work on long-term visions in partnership with the private sector and other agencies (see ‘Long Term Planning’ and ‘Partnership’ components). It is also important to bear young people in mind; for example, designing places for children is likely to make them safer and user-friendlier for everyone.
